Visit of the Maison Rurale de l'Outre-Forêt

Local

The visit of this traditional farmhouse, along with craftmen’s workshops, a dairy and even a classroom, is an invitation to discover rural life, popular arts and traditions of the early 20th century.

The Maison Rurale de l'Outre-Forêt is a former farmhouse, typical of the region called "Outre-Forêt", located in the Vosges du Nord Regional Nature Park. Now a heritage interpretation centre, the Maison Rurale de l'Outre-Forêt offers visitors the opportunity to discover the habitat, way of life, traditions and know-how that existed in the Alsatian countryside between 1920 and 1950.

In this typical Northern Alsatian farmhouse, you will find all the useful functions of rural life.

Horaires d'ouverture

From May 1st to September 30th: Tuesday to Sunday and public holidays from 11am to 6pm.

From 1 October to 30 April: Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11am to 5pm, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 2pm to 6pm. Closed on 25 December and in January.

Outre-Forêt Rural House

The Maison Rurale de l'Outre-Forêt was created at the instigation of the Cercle d'Histoire de l'Outre-Forêt. The Cercle was looking for a farmhouse representative of the North Alsace region to showcase its heritage and open it to the public, but also to pass on the traditions and know-how of the Outre-Forêt. The Rural House was inaugurated in July 1998. Since then, it has welcomed 12 to 15,000 visitors per year.

A history of hygiene and health in Outre-Forêt from the 20th century to the present day

From 2 February to 2 March 2025

Traditions

Free

Discover the relationship between health and carers in the rural world at the beginning of the 20th century, and relive the key moments in the development of hygiene and health in Outre-Forêt right up to the present day! The exhibition, on show from 2 February to 2 March 2025, takes you back to the great discoveries, diagnostic and therapeutic advances, major epidemics, social scourges of the 20th century and the advent of social security.

Find out how favourable developments in health, particularly in infant mortality, are closely linked to water supply, the electrification of the Outre-Forêt region, the priority given to hygiene and medical advances.

The exhibition highlights the medical and paramedical corps in Outre-Forêt: doctors, nursing sisters, nurses, midwives and pharmacists. The hospital and dispensary in Wissembourg, the three spas in Niederbronn, Morsbronn and Pechelbronn, and the municipal baths in Wissembourg and Kutzenhausen are also included in the exhibition.

In addition to the written accounts, a number of authentic objects are on display, including everyday sanitary items, a midwife's delivery chair and medical equipment loaned by former doctors (‘the doctor's scale’ made by Testut, a wooden measuring rod and books).
